Senior Care – a Gift

Senior Care for Total Health and Well-Being

I have been involved with senior care for many years, first as a pastor in a mainline church, then as one who has helped a friend care for her aging mother, now as a teacher of senior yoga and relaxation. It’s seems easy to offer help on our own terms, but it’s more rewarding (for us as well as for them) and ultimately easier for us to meet our older friends where they are.

Meeting an older person where he or she is means first of all being aware of his or her history. Whether paying a visit, taking care of someone in your home, or teaching a class, it’s possible and desirable to gather whatever information you don’t have. Depending on the situation, you can ask friends and relatives ahead of time, or you can just ask questions as you go. Older people, even those impaired with Altzheimers or some form of dementia, usually love to be asked about their past accomplishments, travels, family events, etc. To avoid the “interview” approach, you can even do this indirectly and allude to your own experiences to see what catches the senior’s attention.

With regard to forms of dementia or just lapses of memory, it’s best to speak to the older person in the style of language and the time frame he or she is using at the moment. In other words, if someone speaks to you as if it were 1972 in another part of the world, it’s because that memory has surfaced and is very real. There’s very little to be gotten at that precise moment from reminding that person of the actual year and place. Better to have a little conversation from their perspective, and you may be amazed at the shared laughter and liveliness that ensues. Not only will they feel better, but you’ll even feel more energized and perhaps learn some history!

Of course, it’s easier to relate to an older person who needs special care when you can come and go and more difficult if you’re the primary caregiver. I’ve learned that patience and humor are probably the two most important attributes of a caregiver. You also have to think ahead to what might be needed, like covering hard surfaces and gating stairs in case of falls. While a balanced diet is always desirable, it’s probably best to encourage the person gently into eating healthy foods rather than forcing. Sometimes it’s just good to let go of expectations and just eat ice cream for supper! As with conversation, more well-being is to be gained from laughter than from tears.

When I teach my senior classes in relaxation, I’m awed by the number of older folks who are ready to learn and grow and willing to let go of habitual patterns in order to be better elders to the young people in their lives. They respond when we look at each of them as a whole person who has many more experiences than we’d ever guess from the outside packaging.

Why Celtic Symbols Are Seen In So Many Things and Places

Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle and is a beautiful country full of rural rolling farms, rugged coastline and the urban capital of Dublin. Several things in Ireland have turned into special Irish symbols that have gone into other cultures in a variety of forms such as artwork, jewelry and design. Some of those items would be the Celtic crosses which are the kind of headstones or glass monuments seen in Irish cemeteries, the Celtic knot, the claddaugh and the shamrock.

The first well known symbol is the Celtic cross which was primarily seen in cemeteries in mostly the southern island of Ireland where mainly Catholics lived . As a greater number of people from other countries went to Ireland and would usually visit historic churches where they typically had an old cemetery , people took a liking to the symbol and look of the Celtic Cross. Artists put the cross in various artwork whether it was sculptures, paintings, jewelry and other things for home decorations .

Another famous symbol seen in Ireland is the claddaugh symbol which was once only used as a wedding ring design for both men and women in Ireland . It has two hands holding a heart with a crown above the heart. The heart stands for love, the hands symbolize friendship and the crown symbolizes loyalty which is a lovely symbol to use starting a new marriage. This also , was soon turned into a variety of different items that were merchandised and sold. Many Americans of Irish decent have a claddaugh ring to show their family heritage if they are single or married. The tradition is if the point of the heart points to your heart then you are taken and if the ring is flipped the other way, then they are not married .

The Celtic knot may e in various shapes whether it looks like a circle, a square or even a heart shape. The common thread in all of these knots is that it is never ending line that connects where there is no beginning and no end. The Celtic knot represents the eternity of life, the eternity of nature and the eternity of love and can be found in artwork and Celtic crosses dating back many, many years ago. As tattoos have become more popular, several people wishing to have a tattoo have requested Celtic knots of different shapes because they simply liked the look or the symbolism of it or are Irish and thought this was an unusual method to display that instead of a shamrock.

The shamrock is the most widely known Irish symbol the represents the beautiful green countryside of Ireland with its many shamrocks. It is a three leafed white clover and is the main symbol of Ireland . When many people think of shamrocks they think of St. Patrick’s Day and all of the items that the shamrock is on to celebrate that holiday. While Americans wear bright green blinking shamrock buttons on St. Patrick’s Day, the Irish actually wear real shamrocks pinned to their lapel for the special day .
